Newton's 6th Law of Occupancy
Oct. 29th, 2003 12:39 pmIf a bicycle tries to occupy the same space as an oncoming motor vehicle, calamity will occur.
My bicycle was struck by a police car last night, unfortunately while I was on it.
I was traveling west with traffic. He was coming east, and slowing to turn the vehicle into a parking lot, only going about 2-5 MPH. I was going pretty fast, as the road has a downhill slope. About the time I realized he wasn't going to stop, but was instead continuing to turn, I veered to the right to try to avoid impact. I almost made it, but his bumper clipped my back tire. I went down pretty hard, and have definitely sprained my left ankle. They had me give a statement and talk to Chief Hicks.
Really, I felt worse for Sergeant Cook, who hit me - he was beside himself over it, and couldn't/wouldn't stop apologizing. This is potentially his career on the line.
I denied medical attention last night (stupid!), but the Chief and Assistant Chief both told me that if I had any problems over the next few days to call them and they'll take me to get checked out, and pay for everything. I'm going to call after work, because I can't put any weight on it today, and it's swelled very badly. I don't think anything's seriously broken, but there may be a small fracture in there somewhere. I've never broken anything, but have had 3 hairline fractures over time.
I probably should go now, but we do have a paper to get out, and I don't know how long this will all take.
So there's my adventure. I even got to ride in a police car, because they wouldn't let me bike home. LOL
